He said and insane returned to the same face,
and disturbed the water with tears, and the having been returned form is hidden 475
with the pond having been disturbed. When he had seen which to depart
‘Where do you flee? Stay back and don’t desert me loving, oh cruel one,’
he shouted; ‘let it be allowed to see what it is not to touch
and to provide nourishments for my miserable frenzy.’
and while he hurts, he tore off his garment from the head on top 480
and struck his naked chest with hands white as marble.
his having been beaten chest drew out rose-colored redness
just as fruits are accustomed, which in part shining white,
in part grows red, or as a grape is accustomed to lead
purple color to various clusters not yet ripe. 485
Which at the same time he catches sight of backwards in the having been melted wave,
But he did not carry farther away, as yellow waxes are accustomed to melt
by the light fire and of the frost of the morning
being warmed by the sun, thus (having been) weakened by love
he melts and is devoured little by little by hidden fire. 490
And he neither now retains his color, with white having been mixed to red
nor his life and strength and things which only were pleasing having been seen,
nor his body remains, which Echo had loved at one time.
However as she saw which things, although angry and remembering,
she grieved, and as often as the miserable boy had said “Alas!” 495
She was repeating with an echoing voice, “Alas,”
and when he had struck his own upper arms with his hands,
she also was returning the same sound of striking.
The final voice of the looker was here into the familiar wave:
“Alas beloved boy in vain!” and the place sent back just as many 500
words, and with Goodbye having been said, “Goodbye,” Echo said.
That man laid down his tired head in the green grass;
death closed his eyes, admiring the appearance of the lord.
(then also, after he himself was received in the hellish seat,
he was gazing at the Stygian water.) His sisters the Naiads mourned
and placed their hair having been cut off, for their brother, 505
the Dryads mourned: Echo responded by means of mourning.
And now they were preparing the funeral pyre and the shaken torches and bier:
the body was nowhere, they found a golden flower for the body
with white petals surrounding the middle. 510
